In the interior of the Bay of Algeciras, next to the mouth of the river Palmones, there is an old fishing settlement, which today contains a lot of restaurants. It can be accessed from exit 112 of the Mediterranean motorway. Playa de Palmones beach, backed between houses and trees, accumulates its fine golden sand at its southwest end, where the most extensive area of it is located.

The mouth of the river Palmones and its surroundings are the only natural systems inside the bay, a relic of what were its coasts and a sanctuary for bird species that rest in their wetlands before crossing the Strait.
