BIRTHPLACE OF THE FLAMENCO GUITARIST PACO DE LUCÍA

A city with a seafaring tradition, modern and cosmopolitan, it is the birthplace of the flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía.  Of great botanical and faunistic wealth is the Garganta or "canuto" of the River de la Miel in the Alcornocales Nature Reserve, with the waterfall of La Chorrera, mills, or the remains of roads that were used as shortcuts to cross the mountains since the Middle Ages.

A large part of the tourist attractions of Algeciras are its beaches, including Rinconcillo beach, located in the interior of the Bay, three kilometres from the city centre, which stretches to the mouth of the Palmones river; San García beach and Getares beach, four kilometres from the city in the direction of the Punta Carnero lighthouse. In fact, it is very interesting to visit the Getares inlet, a valuable natural and scenic environment made up of attractive cliffs and a splendid beach, formed by the contributions of the river Pícaro and the Marchenilla and del Lobo streams. The Plaza Alta and the food market are the social centre of the town. The Plaza Alta is home to important monuments such as the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Palma and the small chapel of Nuestra Señora de Europa.

WITH AN IMPORTANT SITE

The heritage of Algeciras is completed by the Town Hall, the chapel of Santo Cristo de la Alameda and the chapel of San Antón, which forms a beautiful ensemble with the Hospital de la Caridad.

From its medieval period (13th-14th centuries) it preserves the important site of the Villa Nueva de Algeciras, with four flanking towers, remains of the barbican, a section of the moat and the access bridge. The remains of the Marinid baths, the royal baths of al-Binya and the Marinid city of Algeciras have also survived to the present day and are on display in the María Cristina Park.

The bullring of "Las Palomas" is one of the most famous in the province.
